Using a Consumer Advocacy Outreach Grant from the REALTOR® Party, FAAR produced video testimonials highlighting the severe lack of affordable housing in the region to help create a civic environment sympathetic to boosting development. The timing of the campaign helped ease the way for a local nonprofit rezoning effort to build one hundred affordable units.

Greater Piedmont REALTORS® (VA) Use Rural Outreach Grant for Onsite Septic Field Trip

Last summer, in addition to the CE course it normally offers on well and septic system regulations in its rural Virginia region, the Greater Piedmont REALTORS® hosted a field trip: with support from a Rural Outreach Grant from the REALTOR® Party, they put participants on a bus and took them to see three different kinds of septic systems, up-close and personal.

Charlottesville Area Association of REALTORS® Supports New Zoning Ordinance Aimed at Correcting Racial Inequity and Increasing Inventory of Affordable Housing

When a racist rally occurred in Charlottesville, Virginia in August 2017, it prompted the City Council to focus on municipal policies through a lens of racial inequity. City leaders revisited the comprehensive land use plan with an eye toward improving affordable housing, an area that had always been intimately linked with race. The Charlottesville Area Association of REALTORS® endorsed the major zoning reform and used grants from the REALTOR® Party to support its passage.

Fredericksburg Area Association of REALTORS® Leverages a Smart Growth Poll to Create a Deeply Informed Regional Growth and Housing Action Plan

Local Virginia REALTORS® Offer Valuable Resource for Future Land Use and Growth

The 650-member Greater Piedmont Area Association of REALTORS® found a way to be a valuable unbiased resource when Culpeper County, one of the five counties it serves, was beginning the arduous task of updating its most important land use, transportation and resource utilization document. Using a Housing Opportunity Grant, the association commissioned a housing market analysis and housing needs study that became a crucial part of the county’s 2015 Comprehensive Plan, proving once again to be a trusted source of information to the local government.

Virginia REALTORS® Emphasize Link Between Good Schools and Good Communities

Raising awareness about the link between good schools and good communities – and how to strengthen both – was the focus of a day-long forum called “Connecting the Dots Between Where Kids Live and Where They Learn." The 29,500-member Virginia Association of REALTORS® used a Housing Opportunity Grant to co-sponsor the day-long forum where 200 attendees explored ways to improve school performance, which in turn, increases housing desirability and values.

Hampton Roads (VA) REALTORS® Co-Host “Better Block” Effort With Smart Growth Grant

One weekend in early November 2013, the 3,000-member Hampton Roads REALTORS® Association [HRRA] co-hosted a block party launching a plan to turn a tired commercial/ residential area into a vibrant arts district. Using a $15,000 Smart Growth Grant, HRRA helped to pay for the “Better Block Weekend” including arranging for six vacant houses within a five-block radius to have open houses and creating a pop-up REALTOR® office in an empty storefront. The support and involvement of REALTORS there helped to create the exciting vision. Over time, with continued effort, that vision will become a reality.
